A magazine issue focussing on workers in Britain's hospitality sector
This issue of Notes From Below centres on the hospitality sector, and discusses how unions deem it to be incapable of being organised. Featuring articles from multiple writers about their own experiences and observations, editing this issue as a guest designer was enlightening. Working back and forth with the organisers, I was in charge of typesetting, proofreading, organising and designing the front cover to align with the usual issues.
My experience as a magazine editor and print assistant was valued for this role, as I was able to produce print-ready quickly. I completed this job whilst I was studying my BA(Hons) and working as a print assistant, so it needed strong time management.
A magazine issue focussing on workers in Britain's hospitality sector
A launch party for this issue was held at Pelican House in London, and organisers distributed leaflets with my front cover design to hospitality workers in the area as an invite. Seeing my design being handed out to so many people was exciting, especially as it was for a strong cause. I had pitched this cover design to the organisers as an alternative take on the concept that they had described to me, and it ended up being the preferred artwork amongst them.
Despite only designing this single issue as a one-off, I learned a lot of invaluable skills from working with academic writers and receiving feedback on my work from the team.
